Cantores y ministriles: Music in Seville in The Golden Age
With Dark Horse Consort
Blue Heron joins forces with the stellar wind band Dark Horse Consort for a festive program of music from 16th-century Seville, whose wealth (derived from its port’s monopoly on trade with the Empire’s overseas dominions) stimulated a Golden Age in the arts. Many of the greatest Spanish composers of the century were associated with the city and its cathedral, including Francisco de Peñalosa, Cristóbal de Morales, Francisco Guerrero, and Alonso Lobo; Guerrero spent most of his life and career in the city and carefully nurtured the cathedral’s wind band, which was established in 1526 — possibly the first in Europe. The program features music of these masters and more and will present sonorous sacred works, delightful dances, and secular songs performed by an ensemble of six singers and six instrumentalists wielding cornetts, shawms, sackbuts, and recorders.
Under the director Scott Metcalfe, the concert will offer a panoramic view of Spanish music from the mid-fifteenth century up through the first decade of the seventeenth. The first half presents a small sample of the riches of Spanish song from the turn of the 16th century, with music from two famous songbooks, the Cancionero de Palacio and the Cancionero de la Colombina. The second half offers a focus on sacred works (by Cristóbal de Morales, Francisco Guerrero and Alonso Lobo); the proceedings will conclude in grand style with a performance of Sebastián de Vivanco’s glorious Magnificat sexti toni sex vocibus, with instrumental interpolations attributed to Philippe Rogier.
This will be Blue Heron's *ONLY* New York City appearance this season
