Choral Confidence

So I am currently student teaching doing middle school chorus (5th-8th).  My school you do not pick an instrumental or vocal track, you do both.  I am a instrumentalist by trade so it has been a lot of learning on my part.

We are having a large issue with confidence in our choruses, mostly 7th grade.  Their attitude and behavior is less than great; as if they have no pride in the ensemble.  If you asked them how they sounded, they would say bad, but they don't want to put the effort into making it sound better.

What can a teacher do to instill confidence and to instill that pride?  We encourage all the time, but there seems to be a disconnect.  Any ideas or thoughts would be fantastic.  We want the kids to sound good and feel good while singing.
