Bernstein and Haydn Concert to be Presented by GMChorale on May 1
Event Date: May 1, 2016
Posted: February 10, 2016
Location: Connecticut, USA
GMChorale invites you to join them on Sunday, May 1, 2016, at 5 pm for their performance of two stirring masterpieces, Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Joseph Haydn’s Nelson Mass (Missa in Angustiis), at The Performing Arts Center, 200 LaRosa Lane, Middletown, CT. Under the baton of Artistic Director Joseph D’Eugenio, the Chorale will be accompanied by the New Haven Symphony Orchestra.
First performed in 1965, the contemporary Chichester Psalms features text from selected Psalms that are common to both Christian and Judaic tradition. With echoes of Broadway musicals in the melodies, the composer blended Biblical Hebrew text and Christian choral tradition.
Haydn’s Nelson Mass, written in 1798, is perhaps his greatest single composition, evoking emotions ranging from solemnity to joy. Although it has been suggested that this work may reflect personal or national political stresses, it was written to celebrate the naming day of Princess Esterhazy, whose family employed the composer.
