Choral settings of Wordsworth or Maya Angelou

I know the poetry of some poets just easily sing and flow to music while others are a significant challenge to set musically.  I, however, have long been a fan of Wordsworth. We have performed Finzi’s “Intimations of Immortality” a couple of times.

My question: Do you know other Wordsworth choral settings or composers who are good at setting that type of poetry?  I really like “Lines Written in Early Spring” and “Tables Turned.”

Another poet that intrigues me is Maya Angelou.  Any musical settings of her poems?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

I might have a go at setting some Wordsworth. Maya Angelou isn't public domain yet as she only died very recently, so would require permission from rightsholders for me to set, and my experience in trying to get this is that most of the time they don't want to hear about it. So now I stick to poetry in the public domain or poetry where I know the poet personally and can ask them directly.

Best,

Kathryn

Robert,

Three Wordsworth settings available from the ECS Publishing Group come to mind, all of which were composed by the late Roger Nixon whose choral music is not programmed nearly often enough. This is a fate which it does not deserve, as all of it is quite good. I hope that you will consider taking a look at them.

Glad Sight (SSATBB)

Cheers,
