How many American choirs?

Hello all,

I'm working on a project that requires a rough estimate of just how many American choirs there are in each state.  Does anyone have access to that information via ACDA, Chorus America, or otherwise, or maybe an idea of whom I should contact that would have that information?  I've searched online and can't seem to track it down.  The closest I can get to is a variety of google searches, but at this point I don't have the time for that.

Let me know when you get a chance, and thank you so much for your help!

Sincerely,

Paul

Can't remember whether there is a breakdown by state, but this is definitely the best place to start.

Check out Chorus America's Chorus Impact Study. It doesn't break the numbers down by state, but it's the only place I've seen a comprehensive estimate of the number of choirs in the US. They also specify their methodology for coming up with those number, which may help you find sources that will give you a better breakdown by state. Hope that helps!

Possibility of contacting each state's ACDA "unit?" Presumably, the ACDA main office has email addresses for each state's president or executive director.
In Minnesota, of course, the unit is ACDA of Minnesota (www.acda-mn.org); the Exec Dir is Bruce Becker, execdirector(a)acda-mn.org
Hope this helps.

Admittedly, this could get tedious for all 50 states, but there are regional directories of choruses. For example, the Choral Arts New England choral directory is a pretty comprehensive list of choruses in the six New England states (though it focuses on "community" groups, with almost no school/university choirs and church choirs, and few show choirs or a cappella-type groups - it can be hard to decide what qualifies as a "choir"!).
