Conductor and Bach scholar Helmuth Rilling and St. Olaf Choir conductor Anton Armstrong will lead a Gala Concert Performance at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig on June 21, 2017 to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. Be part of this select honor choir, participate in lectures by Maestro Rilling and perform Bach Cantata and Motets including:
J.S. Bach was the cantor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig from 1723 until his death in 1750 and is buried in the sanctuary. St. Thomas has a rich music history and outstanding acoustics. Mozart played its organ in 1789, Wagner was baptized there, and Mendelssohn conducted the first performance of Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion after the composer’s death at St. Thomas.
