Welcome basket for new teacher

We have many new choral directors in our area, and are looking to put together a "welcome" basket for them. We plan to include:
  • A nice thermal mug
  • Good pencils
  • Post-it flags (for marking music on the go)
  • A couple of nice recordings
  • Coffee gift card
  • Breath mints
Would you have any other great (and reasonably priced) selections that might be great to include?

I look forward to your creative ideas!

A lovely gesture!  My suggestions [ in addition to yours]:

1. A box of Band-aids  (paper cuts, knee skins, etc are fairly common in Chorus - for teacher and student)
2. Paper clips and small clothespins (tiny ones available at craft stores/possibly dollar stores) for holding/turning pages, keeping music cuts, etc.
3. A card listing contacts for several veterans that will advise/help them in a tight spot - also some music subs!
4. Echinacea, or Airborne, or some over-counter med that boosts immune system.  (Flu rips through some schools (a) end of Sept/early Oct., and can wreak havoc with concert prep)
5. Hand sanitizer/cleaning wipes - seveal small packs might be more convenient than one "vat"-size.  (Avoid fragrance due to allergies.)
6. Purse/pocket sized tissues
7. Blue, black, and red pens for signing all those forms and hall passes (get a big discount box and split them up - maybe 6 per person)
8. Erasers to erase former markings, and prep rented musical theatre scores to send back
9. A disposable/re-cycle-able water bottle, or a permanent, refillable one, where the mouth is wide enough to put ice in. (retards mold.)
[The coffee card is nice... you might consider a grocery card instead, or be sure that the coffe place also includes juice, tea, muffins, sandwiches, etc.  Caffeine dehydrates, which is not great for the voice.  I know, we all drink it, esp to stay alert, [ mea culpa ] but we all need to re-think this.
If you can afford all this for your teachers, I want to know how you manage your budget!  (Smile)
Best to all,
-Lucy

Great ideas!  I would suggest including your phone number and email so that they can call if they are faced with a "challenge" or just need some one to talk to.

I love these ideas! I've had on my to-do list for months to figure out some kind of teacher care package. (I'd like to add a introductory membership to ACDA, of course, and information on our mentoring program and issues of Choral Journal with features on choral teacher issues. ) This conversation is so helpful!
