One of my students just did a huge arranging project on finale 2014, for mac.  She either has the demo version or her program is glitchy, because she can't save files as etf, xml, pdf, or mus,  The only file extension she can save as is MUSX.  Curious if anyone has finale 2014, would be willing to email me at my personal email, so I can send you this file to open on your program and convert into a file format I can open with finale 2012 for windows.
Please and thanks!! :)

Hi Andy, can probably do this - email me, hutchingsmusic(a) (that's not my usual address but it's better for big attachments). I have the PC version but it should work across platforms.
You can also use PDFCreator if you need to save as a PDF and the program isn't leeting you do so - it basically installs itself as a printer, so you access it through the print interface rather than "save as", and it works with the visual data. It's free and extemely useful.

I've got Finale 2012 and I'm a MAC user. The way I save as a PDF is by clicking print and then choosing "PDF" on the lower left of the print window. Easy.  May work the same way in the 2014 version.  If she owns this she can call the Finale folks.  They have been very, very kind over many years to talk me through a problem.
Good luck!

Lenora is right on - go to print and choose save as pdf.
Best wishes,

If these don't work for you, I have both 2012 and 2014 on my Mac and can (hopefully) do a save as for you. Haven't tried that, yet, but happy to for you. dirobdennis at

Printing is not enabled in the demo version, most likelly PDF or hard copy. Even on a Mac ... it it's not authorized it can't be printed.
I use Finale quite extensively and have authorized versions in bot Macintosh and PC format. I frequently import from xml, midi, and other formats.
I'll be happy to give it a try if you want me to proceed.

Hi Thomas,
Do you use the scanning feature? I have not been able to scan some music, and yet, it sometimes scans other music. It is REALLY picky and many times the notes aren't even correct. Is it my all-in-one scanner or the scanning program in there?? Just figured I would ask you since you said that you work extensively in it. I am NOT a piano player at all and wanted to scan all my choral music in it so that I can at least play the backgroud piano accompaniment and the parts for them all at once. Any suggestions I would LOVE! Thanks!

I had the same problem. It's your scanner... sort of. Believe it or not, you need to specify that you want your scanner to scan in greyscale. Color is bad and so is black and white. Once I did that, I still had to do some editing, but it really cut back on what I needed to do.

The way I preserve as a PDF is by simply clicking create and then selecting "PDF" on the reduced remaining of the create screen. Simple.  May perform the same way in the 2014 edition.
